ReadWriteThink offers a collection of online Student Materials to support literacy learning in the K-12 classroom. These interactive tools can be used to supplement a variety of lessons and provide an opportunity for students to use technology while developing their literacy skills. Click on the name of each interactive for a brief description of the tool and a list of the ReadWriteThink lessons that use the tool. From there you'll also be able to directly access the tool and use it in your classroom.
Some of Marge's Favs Bio-Cube - Bio-Cube is a useful summarizing tool that helps students identify and list key elements about a person whose biography or autobiography they have just read. Ideas: Founding fathers, signers of the Declaration of Independence, Explorers, War Generals, Presidents. etc. Bio-Cube Planning Sheet Character Trading Cards - allows students to create their own character cards, which they can then print off, illustrate, and trade or keep. Great for review of historical persons. Ideas: Founding fathers, signers of the Declaration of Independence, Explorers, War Generals, Presidents. etc.
Compare & Contrast Map - The tool offers multiple ways to navigate information including a graphic in the upper right-hand corner that allows students to move around the map without having to work in a linear fashion. Students can also click the Review My Map link and preview what they have written, return to the map for revisions, or print the completed map.
Flip Book - Students and teachers can use the flip book for taking notes while reading, making picture books, collecting facts, or creating question and answer booklets. Create a flip book about an experiment, historical science event, etc.
Letter Generator - The Letter Generator tool is designed to help students learn to identify all the essential parts of a business or friendly letter, and then generate letters by typing information into letter templates. Alexander Graham Bell writes a letter to his wife explaining his invention.
Notetaker - This hierarchical outlining tool allows students to organize up to five levels of information for reading and writing activities. During or after reading, the Notetaker can be used to compile and organize reading notes, research, and related ideas. (Has a great tutorial on how to use this resource.
Printing Press - The interactive Printing Press is designed to assist students in creating newspapers, brochures, flyers, and booklets.
Timeline - Creating timelines with this tool becomes an engaging activity for students as they choose from five different units of measure (date, time, event, entry, or other) and add specific descriptions of each entry.
